As a dancer you must take care of your body. I have written about three important things dancers need to be aware of.
Dancer wellness is so important. Being a dancer many times we lose control of our health or weight. Dancers are ultimately conformed to a certain look. Often times once a dancer isn’t skinny enough, they refrain from ballet. And if not, they mold their body to fit ballet standards. Many dancers develop eating disorders and body dysmorphia and so much more. All dancers have many traits in common. We all strive to be better. We want to look better, feel better, and be noticed by our teachers. Even though this may not be the most important thing in the art it is the most important to a dancer whether they like to admit it or not. While dancers do need to be fit, they do not need to be slim. All people should work towards a healthier life. Which isn’t necessarily dieting or intentionally tying to lose weight. But just putting good in so you can get good out. Dancers should do everything in moderation and take care of their bodies.
Next, Dancers need to refrain from hiding injures. Often times dancers find themselves hurt and still want to continue to dance. They push through the pain no matter how bad it hurts because they don’t want to let anyone down. All dancers are alike this sadly even me. I strained my hamstring earlier this year and it hurt more than my words could explain. Yet, I still continued to dance three times a week and pushed myself even harder than the last. Until the pain was unbearable. All dancers need to work on this. And need to learn when enough is enough. We are wearing and tearing our bodies instead of protecting and nurturing for the future. These injuries are long term and they always come back. So, we should just protect our bodies from the strain and get help we need right away. Also, dance teachers should ask students how they are feeling. Some dance teachers will see a student showing signs of hurting and still continue to let them dance. If teachers prevent the student from dancing the dancer will get treated earlier because the dancer wants to dance.
Finally, Dancers just like all athletes need social interaction. Often times when we dance from a young age, we are only friends with people that dance. And some parents go as far to even home schooling. Which is fine but social interaction with other students and kids is good for the mental. Seeing different people and talking about different things is good for the soul. When our parents trap us, we are often shell shocked when asked about anything out of the norm. I think going to outings and hanging out with many different people is very important to a dancer because often times dance is a lot. We spend all day and night dancing and never get time to sit relax and kick back. Being able to take a break for everyday routine is good for your happiness. Although, these are not all the things dancers need to be well. These are just a few to promote a. better healthier dancer.
